KIRTIPUR, October 27: England batter Dawid Malan produced an impressive half-century to guide Chitwan Rhinos to a competitive total of 157/3 in their 20 overs against Biratnagar Kings in the second match of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2026 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Tuesday.
Malan's composed yet aggressive innings provided the foundation for Chitwan after Biratnagar Kings captain Sandeep Lamichhane won the toss and elected to bowl first. The left-handed opener scored 70 runs from 50 deliveries, including five fours and five sixes, becoming the first batter to register a half-century in the third edition of the tournament.
Malan Anchors Chitwan's Innings
Chitwan got off to a steady start, with Malan and Dev Khanal putting together a 58-run opening partnership. Khanal contributed 12 runs from 15 deliveries before departing, while Arjun Saud struggled to accelerate and managed just three runs from nine balls.
Malan continued to hold the innings together, finding boundaries regularly and keeping the scoreboard moving. His innings came to an end in the 13th over when West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell dismissed him for 70.
His departure, however, did not slow Chitwan's progress. Captain Ravi Bopara and Dan Mousley took responsibility in the closing overs, building an important unbeaten partnership to push the total beyond 150.
Bopara remained unbeaten on 31 from 26 balls, while Mousley contributed an unbeaten 29 off 22 deliveries. Their late acceleration ensured Chitwan finished with a strong total of 157/3.
Biratnagar Bowlers Share the Wickets
Biratnagar Kings managed three wickets but struggled to contain Chitwan's batting lineup, particularly during the middle and closing stages.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was economical, finishing with figures of 1/15 from three overs. Charith Asalanka and Andre Russell also picked up a wicket each.
Despite having several experienced international players in their bowling attack, Biratnagar were unable to prevent Chitwan from building momentum towards the end of the innings.
Biratnagar Kings Face a Target of 158
With 158 runs required for victory, Biratnagar Kings now have a challenging chase ahead. Their experienced batting lineup, featuring international stars, will need to deliver a strong performance against Chitwan's bowling attack.
For Chitwan Rhinos, defending the total would provide an important opportunity to begin their NPL 2026 campaign with a victory.
Malan's half-century has already made an early impression in Season 3, while the contributions from Bopara and Mousley have given Chitwan a competitive platform.
The match continues in Kirtipur, with Biratnagar Kings needing 158 runs to secure their first victory of the tournament.
